King Jan (John) III Sobieski
Jan Sobieski was born in 1629 in Olesko and was Polish king from 1674 until his death in 1696. He was awarded the title ‘Defender of the Faith’ by Pope Innocent XI in 1684.
This statue of King Jan III Sobieski was first unveiled and installed in the then Polish, now Ukrainian, city of Lwów / Lviv in November 1898. However, after the redrawing of Poland’s borders in 1945 it was moved to Wilanow Park Gardens in Warsaw. It was moved to its present day location in Gdansk in 1965.
