Polish ‘name days’ are a Catholic tradition where the ‘feast day’ of the saint becomes a celebration day for Poles that share the same name. They were for many years considered more important than birthdays. This though is changing with the celebration of birthdays becoming increasingly popular. Name day celebrations (Imieniny) involve the gathering of friends and family at the celebrant’s home, as well as the giving of gifts. Polish calendars often contain the names associated with each day.
