- Prior to 1918 and the re-establishment of Poland, Ostrów was called Ostrowo, and part of Germany.
- The First World War German fighter pilot, Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the ‘Red Baron’, was born in Ostrowo / Ostrów.
- Ostrów Wielkopolski has its own motorcycle speedway club.
