Radoslaw Sikorski

Radosław (Radek) Sikorski is a Polish politician and the current Minister of Foreign Affairs in Donald Tusk‘s cabinet.

Radoslaw was born in Bydgoszcz in 1963 and educated at Pembroke College, University of Oxford where he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Until 2006 he held dual British and Polish citizenship and currently lives in a village near Szubin with his American wife and two children.

Polish President Killed in Air Crash

The only news featuring in the news here in Poland today is of the tragic death of the Polish president Lech Kaczyński, his wife Maria, numerous other politicians, senior Polish military officers, members of the Polish clergy, and relatives of victims of the Katyn massacre. The final death toll is believed to be around 100. The plane a Polish Air Force Tupolev aircraft had left Warsaw to attend an event marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre and crashed on its approach to Smolensk in Russia. Several theories have already emerged as to the cause of the crash, which reportedly happened in thick fog.

Lech Kaczynski

Lech Aleksander Kaczyński was a Polish lawyer and right-wing politician. He was President of Poland from 2005 until his death in an air crash in April 2010, aged 60. He also seved as Mayor of Warsaw from 2002 until December 2005.

As a child, Lech starred in a well-loved Polish film, ‘The Two Who Stole the Moon’ (O dwoch takich, co ukradli ksiezyc) with his twin brother Jaroslaw. In 2001 he founded the conservative political party ‘Law and Justice’ (Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc / PiS) with his brother Jarosław.

Andrzej Lepper is a Eurosceptic Polish politician and the leader of the populist Samoobrona RP (Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland) political party.

He was the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2006 and 2007, in the cabinet of Jaroslaw Kaczynski. He was also a candidate in the Polish presidential election in 1995, 2000, 2005 and, rumour has it, will also contest again in 2010.

Leszek Miller is a Polish left-wing politician who served as Prime Minister of Poland from 2001 to 2004. He is the current leader of the Democratic Left Alliance, which is the second largest opposition party in Poland.

Donald Franciszek Tusk is the current Prime Minister of Poland. He has been in this position since November 2007. He co-founded and is chairman of the right of centre Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska) party. He is politically fairly conservative, in favour of lower taxes and a reduction in bureaucracy. Tusk is also seen by most as a supporter of greater political and economic integration within the European Union. He is known to oppose abortion on demand, euthanasia, and the legalization of marijuana.
