A recipe we use in our household to make Zupa Grochowka / Split Pea Soup. Also known in army circles as Military pea soup (grochówka wojskowa)!
Ingredients for pea soup:
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 slices bacon, chopped
2 large sausages, sliced
1 onion, chopped
1 large carrot, chopped
2 litres water (or better vegetable stock)
2 bay leaves
12 grains of Allspice
500 g. green split peas, rinsed and drained
Pepper and salt, to taste
1. Place oil and bacon in a large pan and cook until browned. Remove bacon from pan and set aside. Add onions, carrots, season with salt, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 10 minutes. Add sliced sausage.
2. Add bay leaves and allspice to pot with peas, and 2 litres water. Bring to a boil. Simmer, covered, until peas are very tender, about 1 hour. Remove from heat. Stir meat into soup, season with salt and pepper, and serve.
